Holy Sh*t, These Greek Yogurt Ice Cream Bars Are Insanely Good

Holy Sh*t, These Greek Yogurt Ice Cream Bars Are Insanely Good

We have a bit of an obsession with healthy ice creams; from Halo Top to Enlightened, we’re always on the prowl for a good-for-you frozen treat. When a box of Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt bars came to our desks, it was mere minutes before all of them were gone. The results? Amazing. Everyone was super into all the flavors.

Yasso’s sweet treats ring in at 100 calories a pop (pun intended), and 120 calories per sandwich. They each have five grams of protein, and are low in sugar – seven grams in the sandwiches and 14 grams in the pops (much, MUCH lower in sugar than the Unicorn Frappuccino). The bars have two grams of fat, while the sandwiches have 3.5 grams. You’ll also get some gut-friendly probiotics from the Greek yogurt, which is a nice added health bonus.

So how do they taste? Damn delicious. Here’s a breakdown of the flavors we tried – S’mores, Toffee Caramel Chocolate Chip, and Black Raspberry Chip bars, and Vanilla and Mint cookie sandwiches.

  • WOW.
  • OMG, it tastes like graham cracker! These are stupid good. Perfection.
  • Can’t believe it’s only 100 calories
  • You can really taste the graham cracker, and I like the marshmallow, but I’m not sure what they’re made of. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because of the aftertaste.
  • Literally tastes like a straight-up frozen s’more.

Mint Sandwich

  • Doesn’t taste that healthy!
  • I was put off by the tartness of Greek yogurt with mint, but with the Oreo it works!
  • It wasn’t all that minty, but somehow refreshing.
  • Had a funny aftertaste, but I keep going back for more. Overall pretty impressive for a healthy dessert.

Vanilla Sandwich

  • So good and yummy!
  • Can’t even taste the difference [between this and a regular ice cream sandwich].

Black Raspberry Chip

  • Great balance of fruit and chocolate!
  • Love the white and dark chocolate with the raspberry – a bit of an aftertaste though!

Toffee Caramel Chocolate Chip

  • Very rich! Good, but not sure I could finish it all.
  • Good ice cream flavor!

If You Love Halo Top, You’ll Want to Check Out Enlightened Ice Cream

If You Love Halo Top, You’ll Want to Check Out Enlightened Ice Cream

The healthy ice cream market is booming right now – with industry leaders like Halo Top catching fire, it looks like everyone wants a scoop of these lightened-up frozen desserts.

Enter: Enlightened Ice Cream. It’s low-calorie (between 240 and 400 calories per pint, depending on the flavor), high-protein, and sugar-free – it uses erythritol (sugar alcohol) for sweetness . . . just like Halo Top. If you’re a fan of the gold-rimmed pints at the grocery store, you’ll want to try out the selection from Enlightened, as they have over 20 flavors on offer. We tried seven of them, including Chocolate, Vanilla, Butter Pecan, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Toasted Almond, Snickerdoodle, and Piña Colada.

If we learned anything from this taste test, it’s that ice cream flavors are like politics on Facebook – as in pretty polarizing. Some of our testers loved the intensity of flavoring while others were totally turned off by it. For example, some rated Butter Pecan with a 5, exclaiming, “BUTTER!!!” while others gave it a 2 saying, “ew, butter!” – so keep that in mind when going through these reviews. In the love-hate relationship that manifested in our taste test, some clear winners emerged – like the Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Butter Pecan.

  • “Tastes like rocky road!”
  • “Best one. Texture is good for a chocolate flavor. Creamy.”
  • “Like a fudgsicle.”

  • “Light and refreshing!”
  • “Tastes like perfume.”
  • “Fro-yo type flavor” (several people said this).
  • “Weird aftertaste”(x2), “Really weird aftertaste,” and “Do not like aftertaste.”

Chocolate Peanut Butter

  • “Love everything about this flavor.”
  • “Watered-down Reese’s.”
  • “This was my favorite! Super yummy and peanut buttery. Yum.”
  • “Would be great for weight gain.” (???)

  • “Wanted to like this more . . . it’s like frozen horchata.”
  • “Does not taste like snickerdoodles; too much cinnamon and not enough cookie. Very pumpkiny.”
  • “Good but a little bland.”
  • “Tastes like a chai latte.”

Butter Pecan

  • “Butter!!! Intense flavor, good texture.”
  • “A little too much butter.”
  • “DAMN PECAN! Love this one. Needs extra texture of the pecan.”
  • “The pecans carry this one.”
  • “Pancake.” (Also ???)
  • “Refreshing and perfect texture with the pecan.”

Toasted Almond

  • “Tastes like slick, cold marzipan.”
  • “Love the almond flavor.”
  • “Not my fave, but def addicting. Like I keep wanting to eat it after each bite.”
  • “Creamy, a little too much almond extract for my taste.”
  • “This is disgusting. It’s so gross and doesn’t taste almond like at all.”
  • “Too intense of flavor.”

Piña Colada

  • “Love this. Would mix it with some Malibu and enjoy on a sunny day.”
  • “I taste confused.”
  • “Funky aftertaste, like a diet/sugar-free aftertaste. Also sunscreen.”
  • “Is this sunscreen ice cream?”
  • “This is my favorite – sweet, refreshing, and yummy.”
  • “Usually I hate piña colada but I liked this.”
  • “Tastes fabulous – the aftertaste is there but subtle.”

These New Gummies Are the Halo Top of Candy

These New Gummies Are the Halo Top of Candy

Usually healthy desserts kind of feel like a sham, right? You try to tell yourself “it’s just like the real thing!” But . . . is it? Is it really?

However, there are some brands that are seeeriously stepping up their game. Take Halo Top, for instance. The wizards at Halo Top Creamery created a healthy version of ice cream that was so delicious, our taste testers didn’t even realize it was anything other than traditional ice cream.

Another brand that’s doing just that? Smart Sweets. We were lucky enough to be among the first tasters of these healthy gummy bears, and honestly, we can’t put the bag down – they’re that addictive. The best part is that after housing an entire bag of candy, you don’t feel bad (physically or mentally) . . . but you might feel like going to the bathroom. These sweet and sour little bears have insane amounts of fiber, but we’ll get to that in a minute. Here’s the rundown on our new healthy obsession.

What Are Smart Sweets?

Gummy bears! They come in the original sweet version and “seriously sour,” a coated version that has a sour powder similar to what’s on the outside of Warheads candies, if you’re familiar with them.

Smart Sweets was founded by 22-year-old Tara Bosch in Canada; it’s currently available in stores across all of Canada, and online orders ship to the US and Canada. You can order a box of six bags for $26 USD.

What Makes Them Healthy?

  • Almost no sugar. Smart Sweets are sweetened with chicory root and a small amount of stevia, so the ENTIRE BAG contains only 2 grams.
  • Your whole day’s fiber. Not only do these gummies curb a sweet tooth, but they’ve got 96 percent of your daily fiber – as much as SIX servings of veggies. This makes them filling and great for digestion. Just don’t go overboard . . . we learned that one the hard way.
  • Non-GMO, no artificial colors or ingredients. Smart Sweets keeps it clean.
  • Even a little protein! It’s not often you get protein in your candy! These have 5 grams per bag.
  • Allergen-free. No peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, soy, corn fiber, gluten, or sugar alcohols.

How Do They Taste?

They’re sweet, tangy, and if you like the sour kind, they’re really tart! The flavors are the same for each version: raspberry, peach, apple, and lemon. This makes them a little more unique compared to the traditional gummy bears you’ll get at the drugstore.

The texture is MUCH firmer and chewier than a traditional gummy. Some of our testers were not fans and were too put-off by the texture and taste to enjoy the gummies (like our Fitness director, Michele). That said, most of us (including myself, our Food editor Anna, and Social Media editor Victor) really enjoyed them and embraced the chewiness.

If you’re stevia-sensitive, you may notice the flavor, but most of us have found that it’s subtle if not downright unnoticeable.

We Got the New Flavors of Halo Top’s Healthy Ice Cream (Spoiler Alert: the Cookie Dough Is Insane)

We Got the New Flavors of Halo Top’s Healthy Ice Cream (Spoiler Alert: the Cookie Dough Is Insane)

The second batch of Halo Top flavors debuted late last year, and when the frosty shipment came to the POPSUGAR offices, we collectively lost our sh*t. Seeing as how the first time we tried Halo Top’s original flavors we ended up with best taste test results ever, we’ve been craving this healthy ice cream ever since.

A quick refresher: Halo Top is high-protein, low-calorie, low-carb, and low-sugar. Not that we’d ever encourage you to polish off a pint solo, but if you accidentally happened to do so, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to ever happen to you.

The new flavors we sampled were chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate almond crunch, salted caramel, pistachio, black cherry, peanut butter cup, red velvet, s’mores, and oatmeal cookie. They’ve also launched cookies n’ cream, but that flavor was so good it just happened to uh . . . mysteriously disappear . . .

Here’s what went down with the flavors, in our editors’ own words, from “pretty good” to “HOLY SH*T.”

Black Cherry

  • “Tastes like fake sugar.”
  • “A bit fake tasting.”
  • “Tastes like fake cherry candy.”

Chocolate Almond Crunch

  • “Too much almond.” (this was said about four times)
  • “Marzipany”
  • “I actually really like the amaretto flavor . . . tastes like amaretto hot chocolate, but frozen.”
  • “I like this but it maybe needs more chocolate.”

Sea Salt Caramel

  • “Not enough sea salt.”
  • “Kinda tastes like diet ice cream.”
  • “Too sweet, missing the salt”
  • “Don’t taste the sea salt, but still good.”

  • “I don’t even know what this tastes like but I love it.”
  • “Why do I taste coffee?”
  • “Doesn’t really taste like s’mores.”
  • “Pass.”
  • “Almost caramel in flavor, no hint of marshmallow.”

Peanut Butter Cup

  • “I like it but I don’t love it.”
  • “Good PB flavor, but it’s like a fro-yo that’s trying to be an ice cream. Trying really hard.”
  • “Needs more peanut butter cup.”
  • “Eeeeh . . . this ain’t cuttin’ it.”
  • “Tastes good, but where are the actual peanut butter cups?”
  • “Like the ribbons of peanut butter.”

  • “Tastes like marzipan.”
  • “YUM. Sweet, but tasty.”
  • “Very creamy, sweet . . . weird aftertaste.”
  • “Very sweet and smooth, but lack of flavor notes (vanilla-like).”
  • “Meh.”
  • “I like the pistachio flavor, but there’s a fake sweetness to it, much like my ex BF.”
  • “Yes! Not too sweet and doesn’t taste too healthy.”

Red Velvet

  • “My favorite. Creamy and yummy.”
  • “Love the chocolate pieces.”
  • “Pretty good, especially for 360 calories a pint!”
  • “Like the chunks of chocolate.”

Oatmeal Cookie

  • “Favorite! I love the real oats; nice texture and flavor.”
  • “Has the oatmeal texture.”
  • “Most on point, flavor-wise. Has a good balance of sugar, flavor, and cream.”
  • “Like if oatmeal cookies and ice cream had a delicious baby.”
  • “YES! Not too sweet.”

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

  • “This is DELICIOUS.”
  • “HOLY SH*T.”
  • “This one is so so so so good!!!”
  • “SO yummy!!!”
  • “The best of the bunch!”
